The Philadelphia Phillies place Brett Myers on the DL

Blogged under Front Page, Injuries, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Tuesday 29 May 2007 at 12:09 am

The Phillies have placed closer Brett Myers on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.  In 21 games (3 starts) this season, Myers is 1-2 with 6 saves, a 5.50 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.  In 36 innings, he has allowed 35 hits, 18 walks and he’s whiffed 51 batters.  Myers has been pretty good so far this season out of the bullpen and he will be hard to replace.  Antonio Alfonseca will get the first shot to close until Myers is ready to return.  Alfonseca is 2-1 with 1 save, a 4.57 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP so far this season.  In 21.2 innings he has allowed 27 hits and walked 9 batters while whiffing 9.  Look for Geoff Geary and Ryan Madson to get a shot at closing if Alfonseca falters.

20 year old righty starter Carlos Carrasco is the #1 prospect of the Philadelphia Phillies according to Baseball America.  Carrasco is pitching in Hi-A ball for the Phillies and he’s started 9 games so far this season.  In those 9 games, Carrasco is 4-2 with a 4.14 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP so far this season.  In 45.2 innings, he has allowed 41 hits, 7 homers, has walked 18 batters and whiffed 33.  Look for the Phillies to be very patient with Carrasco and only promote him if he deserves it.

Jon Lieber has been pitching well since moving into the rotation for the Phillies

Jon Lieber has been one of the best pitchers on the Phillies staff this season.  In 8 games (6 starts), Lieber is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.  He has thrown 42 innings this season and he has allowed 39 hits, walked 12 batters and struck out 25.  Lieber’s pitching has helped the Phillies crawl out of their early season funk.  Hopefully, he will keep up the good work.
