The Philadelphia Phillies place Jon Lieber on the DL

Blogged under Front Page, Injuries, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Saturday 23 June 2007 at 10:46 pm

Just when you think the Phillies pitching situation can’t get any worse, Jon Lieber ruptures a tendon in his right foot.  Lieber will be out until at least September and maybe the remainder of the season.  Lieber pitched in 14 games (12 starts) and he was 3-6 with a 4.73 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  He has thrown 78 innings this season and he allowed 91 hits, walked 22 batters and whiffed 54.  The Phillies will need to make a move for a starting pitcher as they really don’t have anyone in the minors ready to contribute.  The Phillies have recalled Clay Condrey to replace Lieber on the roster.  Condrey has pitched in 12 games this season with the Phillies and he’s 2-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP.  In 15 innings for the Phils this season, Condrey has allowed 22 hits, walked 7 batters and whiffed 10.

The Philadelphia Phillies sign J.C. Romero

The Phillies have signed lefty reliever J.C. Romero to a minor league contract.  The Phillies will likely use Romero out of their bullpen and if he throws strikes, he will be effective.  In 23 games this season, Romero is 1-0 with 1 save, a 3.15 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP.  Romero pitched 20 innings for the Red Sox this season and he allowed 24 hits, walked 15 batters and whiffed 11.

Pat Burrell has been awful so far this season for the Philadelphia Phillies

Pat Burrell has been awful this season and it’s hurting the offense big time.  If Burrell doesn’t pick it up soon at the plate, Ryan Howard might never see a strike this season.  In 68 games this year, Burrell is 41 for 194 (.211 avg, .769 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 8 homers and 29 RBIs.  The Phillies are stuck with Burrell as they don’t have anyone better than him to play left field and they’re paying him a lot of money so he’s almost impossible to move in a trade.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Francisco Rosario on the DL

Blogged under Front Page, Injuries, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Monday 18 June 2007 at 10:22 am

The Phillies have placed relief pitcher Francisco Rosario on the 15-day disabled list with a case of right shoulder inflammation.  Rosario has not pitched well so far this season for the Phillies.  In 18 games, Rosario is 0-3 with a 6.64 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP.  He has thrown 20.1 innings and he has allowed 29 hits, walked 11 batters and whiffed 17.  The Phillies have recalled 28 year old righty Brian Sanches to replace Rosario in the bullpen.  Sanches has pitched in 24 games in AAA ball this season and he’s 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP there.  In 30 innings he has allowed 41 hits, walked 4 batters and whiffed 39.  Sanches threw a shutout inning yesterday for the Phillies in his debut for the season.  Don’t look for Sanches to be much better than Rosario has been this season for the Phillies.

Matt Childers suspended 50 games

Blogged under Front Page, The Minors, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Sunday 17 June 2007 at 9:34 am

AAA pitcher Matt Childers has been suspended for 50 games for violating the minor league drug and prevention treatment program.  He has started 7 games in AAA ball and he was 4-1 with a 3.41 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP.  He has pitched 37 innings and he has allowed 45 hits, walked 10 batters and whiffed 26.  Childers screwed himself up pretty good here because the Phillies have had a lot of injuries in their pitching staff and he might have got a call from them at some point.
