The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Kyle Lohse from the Reds

The Phillies have acquired starting pitcher Kyle Lohse from the Reds but they paid a huge price in lefty starter Matt Maloney.  Maloney was the #9 prospect in the Phillies entire minor league system coming into this season according to Baseball America.  He has started 21 games in AA ball this season and he was 9-7 with a 3.94 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP.  In 125.2 innings this season he has allowed 117 hits, walked 45 batters and whiffed 115.  Still, the Phillies needed help in the rotation now…so this trade could wind up helping them some this season.  Lohse started 21 games this season for the Reds and he was 6-12 with a 4.58 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.  In 131.2 innings this season he has allowed 143 hits, walked 33 batters and whiffed 80.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Ryan Madson on the DL

The Phillies have placed righty reliever Ryan Madson on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder.  This will hurt the Phillies as Madson has been one of their best relievers this season.  Madson has pitched in 38 games this season and he is 2-2 with 1 save, a 3.29 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP.  In 56 innings pitched this season Madson has allowed 48 hits, walked 23 batters and whiffed 43.  The Phillies have recalled Geoff Geary to replace Madson in the bullpen.  Geary has pitched in 37 games this season for the Phillies and he is 1-2 with a 5.31 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP.  Geary has thrown 39 innings for the Phillies this season and he has allowed 43 hits, walked 16 batters and whiffed 24.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Tadahito Iguchi from the White Sox

The Phillies have acquired Tadahito Iguchi from the White Sox for 20 year old reliever Mike Dubee.  This was a steal for the Phillies as Dubee is not that great of a prospect.  Iguchi will immediately step into Chase Utley’s starting spot until he returns from his broken hand.  Iguchi has played in 90 games this season for the White Sox and he was 82 for 327 (.251 avg, .722 OPS) with 45 runs scored, 6 homers, 31 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.  Look for Iguchi to play well for the White Sox as he should see a lot of fastballs batting in the Phillies lineup.

The Philadelphia Phillies place Chase Utley on the DL

The Phillies have placed All-Star 2B Chase Utley on the 15-day disabled list with a broken hand.  He will likely miss 4-6 weeks and this will really hurt the Phillies offense as Utley was having his best season ever.  Utley has played in 100 games this season and he is 134 for 399 (.336 avg, .995 OPS) with 79 runs scored, 17 homers, 82 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.  Abraham Nunez will likely take over as the starting secondbaseman of the Phillies until Utley is ready to return.  Nunez has played in 81 games this season and he is 46 for 180 (.256 avg, .627 OPS) with 19 runs scored and 13 RBIs.

Adam Eaton needs to start earning his paycheck that he gets from the Phillies

It’s amazing that Adam Eaton has a 8-5 record considering how poorly he has pitched this season.  Eaton has a 5.69 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP which proves how lucky he is that he plays for a team that can hit the ball the way the Phillies can.  Eaton has allowed 17 homers and he has walked 48 batters in 104.1 innings this season and he will need to improve on those numbers if he has any hope of finishing this season with a winning record.
