The Philadelphia Phillies have seven free agents heading into the winter

The Phillies have seven free agents heading into this winter. This is how I see things shaking out with these players:

Jamie Moyer: 47-year old lefty starting pitcher Jamie Moyer started 19 games for the Phillies last season and he was 9-9 with a 4.84 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. His season ended with injury. VERDICT: The Phillies should thank Moyer for the decent years that he gave them and then let him walk.

J.C. Romero: 34-year old lefty reliever J.C. Romero pitched in 60 games out of the pen for the Phillies last season and he was 1-0 with 3 saves, a 3.68 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. The Phillies already have declined his option for 2011. VERDICT: The Phillies will let him walk.

Jose Contreras: 38-year old righty reliever Jose Contreras pitched in 67 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last season and he was 6-4 with 4 saves, a 3.34 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. He was really tough in his first year as a full time reliever. VERDICT: The Phillies should give him a raise and bring him back.

Chad Durbin: 32-year old righty reliever Chad Durbin pitched in 64 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last season and he was 4-1 with a 3.80 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. VERDICT: Like Contreras, I would give Durbin a raise and try to bring him back.

Mike Sweeney: 37-year old righty swinging 1B Mike Sweeney played in 26 games for the Phillies last season and he was 12 of 52 (.231 avg, .695 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 2 homers, 8 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Sweeney played in 56 games for the Phillies & Mariners last season and he was 38 of 151 (.252 avg, .765 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 8 homers, 26 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. VERDICT: Bringing back Sweeney on a minor league deal might be a good idea because he can still hit.

Jayson Werth: 31-year old righty swinging RF Jayson Werth played in 156 games for the Phillies last season and he was 164 of 554 (.296 avg, .920 OPS) with 106 runs scored, 27 homers, 85 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. Werth is the second best outfielder on the free agent market behind only Carl Crawford of the Rays. VERDICT: The Phillies decide not to ante up and they let Werth leave.

Jimmy Rollins: 31-year old switch hitting shortstop Jimmy Rollins played in only 88 games for the Phillies last season and he was 85 of 350 (.243 avg, .694 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 8 homers, 41 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. The Phillies have a club option for the 2011 season on Rollins. VERDICT: I see the Phillies picking up Rollins’ option and then praying that he can stay healthy.

Paul Hoover rejects a minor league assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies

34-year old righty swinging catcher has decided to test the free agent market. He played in 9 games for the Phillies last season and he was 5 for 22 (.227 avg, .638 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Hoover played in 12 games over 2 years with the Phillies and he was 8 for 26 (.308 avg, .764 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 3 RBIs. I don’t blame Hoover for looking around and it’s still possible that the Phillies could bring him back on a minor league deal.

Jamie Moyer decides to test free agency instead of staying with the Phillies

47-year old lefty starting pitcher Jamie Moyer has elected to become a free agent, likely ending his time with the Phillies. Moyer started 19 games for the Phillies this year before injuring himself. He was 9-9 with a 4.84 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP last season. Moyer pitched in 123 games (118 starts) in his five years with the Phillies and he is 56-40 with a 4.55 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. I wouldn’t count Moyer out as far as pitching effectively goes as he was solid for the Phillies this year.

Greg Dobbs decides to leave the Philadelphia Phillies

32-year old lefty swinging 3B/1B Greg Dobbs has decided to become a free agent. Dobbs played in 88 games for the Phillies last season and he was 32 of 163 (.196 avg, .583 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 5 homers, 15 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 455 games in four years with the Phillies and he is 226 of 867 (.261 avg, .737 OPS) with 103 runs scored, 29 homers, 130 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Dobbs will likely hook on with another team over the winter but the Phillies will likely sign player better than him to work off the bench.

The Philadelphia Phillies decline 2011 option on J.C. Romero

The Phillies have declined a 2011 option on 34-year old lefty reliever J.C. Romero valued at $4.5 million bucks. Romero pitched in 60 games (0 starts) for the Phillies last seasosn and he was 1-0 with 3 saves, a 3.68 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. He has pitched in 213 games (0 starts) in his four years with the Phillies and he is 6-6 with 4 saves, a 2.60 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Phillies try to re-sign Romero for a much lower base salary in 2011.
